How many abortions are actually performed in the US?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 29.3 abortions performed for every 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 in the United States in 1981,

The amount has decreased by 35% since then. The rate was 11.4 in 2019, the most recent year for which data is available.

According to studies by the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that advocates for abortion rights,

the reduction has been observed in almost all states, regardless of whether access to abortion was restricted.

But if the broad protections of Roe v. Wade are invalidated, that might alter.

If abortion is severely restricted or outlawed in the 26 states where that is anticipated should Roe be overturned,

according to Middlebury College economics professor Caitlin Knowles Myers, the number of abortions nationwide may decrease by as much as 13%.

Increases in clinic distance have been linked to lower abortion rates, particularly for women with limited financial resources and challenging personal situations.
